(1) and (2): Turn-Around Assistance
Swim volunteers 1 and 2 will provide help to any swimmers needing assistance during the turn-around/lane change. It may be difficult for some inexperienced swimmers (especially those using swim aids) to navigate underneath the lane lines while switching lanes.
(5), (6), and (7): Staging Area
Volunteers 5, 6, and 7 will organize the swimmers as they arrive at the staging area prior to their race start times. The starters (volunteers 3 and 4) will call for the athletes by race number. It is the staging area volunteers’ responsibility to ensure the athlete is prepared for the swim, and is sent to the race start position when they are called. The staging volunteers will also answer any last minute questions the athletes may have about the swim portion of the race.
(3) and (4): Starters
Volunteers 3 and 4 are responsible for calling the athletes to the swim start position at their posted start times. They will enter the athlete’s race number into the timing system and press the “start” buttons as they yell “go” to let the athlete know to begin the swim.
(8): End-of-Swim Assistance
Volunteer 8 is responsible for assisting the athlete as they complete the pool portion of the race and exit the pool to the transition area. They will assist any swimmers who are confused about when to stop, and they will direct them to the transition area doorway. Once they are outside of the door, a transition area volunteer will be there to assist them to the transition area.
(9): Doorway/Spectator Monitor
Volunteer 9 is responsible for monitoring the pathway out of the east pool doors This volunteer will ensure the path to the transition area is clear for all athletes exiting the pool. This volunteer will also ensure that parents and spectators understand where assigned spectator areas are located, and that they do not enter the athlete-only area.
Water volunteers will be in the water during the 5-8 year old swim. They will assist swimmers that need a little help navigating the course. They will also be an extra set of eyes to help athletes that are struggling in the water. Water volunteers will be able to assist athletes, but they will be asked not to carry or push athletes through the course.
